An Aquaculture in the Port of Sines, operated by Seaculture (Jerónimo Martins Agro-business), is benefiting from the forecast of sea temperature, and other metocean parameters, generated from the Aquasafe system of Sines. To this end, a 3-year contract was signed at the end of 2017.
An aquaculture operation is subject to several natural fluctuations that impact directly fish performance, with water temperature as a key parameter that controls fish metabolism and its feeding behaviour. Good environmental forecasts help to define the appropriate feeding which will enable the fish to feed efficiently and grow to their full potential, minimizing food waste. The service being provided by HIDROMOD, with reliable information on local metocean conditions (near real time data and short term forecasts) enables to anticipate the occurrence of favourable or unfavourable marine conditions and adapt the operation. Additionally, access to the locally acquired near real time data helps to improve the effectiveness of local monitoring programs and verify the accuracy of the delivered forecasts.
Hidromod maintains for Sines a data management system and high resolution forecasts (meteorological, hydrodynamic 3D and marine agitation) since 2007. This service is currently being used by the Port of Sines, Seaculture’s aquaculture operation and EDP’s coal fired Power Plant.
